EXPERIENCE IN THE TREATMENT OF URODYNAMIC DISORDERS IN CHILDREN WITH SPINA BIFIDA

Abstract

The article “Experience in the treatment of urodynamic disorders in children with spina bifida” reflects the difficulties faced by patients after surgical correction of spina bifida at the City Child Clinical Hospital Emergency Care. Regardless of how successfully the spinal hernia itself is corrected, the risk of developing urodynamic disorders remains quite high. These disorders are mainly associated with recurrent urinary tract infections due to residual urine, vesicoureteral reflux, and hyper- or hyporeflex bladder. All these abnormalities of the urinary system create difficulties in maintaining a normal life, adapting to society, and may eventually lead to chronic renal failure. The study analysed the results of examination and treatment of children with spinal dysraphism. It was found that the female-to-male ratio was 2:1. Immediately after birth, some patients demonstrated lower flaccid paraplegia, urinary incontinence, and anal gaping. The examination plan included laboratory and instrumental methods such as complete blood count, urinalysis, biochemical blood analysis, bacteriological urine culture, ultrasound of the kidneys and urinary system, cystography, and urography. Recurrent urinary tract infections were detected in 78.2% of children, residual urine in 47.8%, and ureterohydronephrosis in 3 patients. Uroseptics were used in treatment, while in cases of ureterohydronephrosis periodic catheterisation of the bladder produced positive results. The findings indicate the need for further development of treatment and rehabilitation regimens for this group of patients.
