Awareness and socio-behavioural risk factors for intestinal parasitic diseases among students in Bishkek

Abstract

This article examined the level of awareness and hygiene habits of students at five higher education institutions in Bishkek regarding parasitic diseases. The study was conducted using a questionnaire survey among a large sample of respondents of different genders and socio-economic backgrounds. The aim of the study was to assess students’ awareness of parasitic diseases, evaluate their hygiene habits and identify possible gender and social differences in the practice of adhering to sanitary standards. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 849 respondents of both genders of various ages and from different socio-economic backgrounds. The questionnaire covered knowledge of parasitic diseases, sources of infection, hygiene practices, water consumption and pet ownership. The overwhelming majority of respondents (88.8 %) demonstrated a basic level of knowledge about parasitic diseases and adherence to basic hygiene practices, with female respondents showing a higher level of awareness and better hygiene habits. Despite the low incidence of disease and relatively similar hygiene conditions across different social strata, differences were noted in the specifics of hygiene procedures and access to resources. Students generally demonstrate good hygiene habits; however, there is a need to improve knowledge regarding the transmission routes of parasitic diseases and methods of prevention. Particular attention should be directed towards educational interventions targeting male students and individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The findings highlight the need for the continued development and implementation of educational programmes promoting sanitary and hygiene practices
